Cambridgeshire Road to Wimbledon County Finals.
The County Road to Wimbledon finals took place over the Saturday and Sunday of the All England Finals on 15th and 16th July.
Any Club or school can enter the Road to Wimbledon tournament which is for players rated 10.2 to 7.1. The winner and runner up of the Club and School tournaments are then invited to the County Finals and the winner of the County Event then goes to Wimbledon in August to play in a tournament on the hallowed turf of the All England Club.
There were separate girls and boys events with a draw size of 32 players. There were some really well contested matches over the course of the weekend and then semi- finals and finals were played on the Sunday morning allowing everyone to get home to watch Federer and Cilic!
In the semi -finals Adam Miller of Huntingdon (having earlier beaten the top seed Seth Briggs Williams) beat Ted Hope of the Cambridge Club and Charlie Adams (Cambridge Club) beat Harrison Kemp (Huntingdon). In a well fought final Charlie Adams won a tight first set against Miller 6/4 and then romped away with the second set 6/0. Charlie played controlled, aggressive tennis to secure his place in the finals and was absolutely delighted with his performance. He is really looking forward to the wonderful experience of playing at Wimbledon.
In the girls event the best matches were in the semi-finals where top seed Isabelle Havard of David Lloyd Peterborough battled very hard to overcome Gabriella Zailer-Fletcher of the Cambridge Club 6/4, 6/1 and Esha Rashid (Cambridge Club) overcame Tiffany Qin (Parkside) in the closest and longest match of the tournament 5/7, 7/5, 10-7. In the final Isabelle was too solid for Esha and won 6/2, 6/0. Again Isabelle was delighted to be able to represent Cambridgeshire in the finals.
Referee Sue Rich was delighted with the numbers competing and the quality of the matches and wishes Charlie and Isabelle all the best in the finals and hopes to go and watch them both play.
