Mini tennis coaching
Cambridge Lawn Tennis Club is a mini tennis accredited club. It has an
extensive mini tennis programme which for the current year (2007–8)
covers the following age ranges:
- Mini
red (born in 2000, 2001 and later)
- Mini
orange (born in 1999 and 2000)
- Mini
green (born in 1998 and 1999)
Coaching sessions at the club give children the opportunity to play up to
four times a week.
The most promising children are invited to join the ACES scheme. The coaching groups are smaller and children of a
similar standard are grouped together. They are expected to play twice a
week, play in mini tennis tournaments and have a desire to improve. The
ACES scheme is subsidised by the club – if the players enrol for more
than one lesson a week, the second and third lessons are offered at
reduced rates. Selected children are also offered subsidised individual
lessons with the head coach as
part of the scheme to encourage them to commit to their tennis and help
them improve at a faster level.
The next stage to this development are tennis camps (both indoors or outdoors) for selected players from
the club. The children come together for two to three hours at weekends,
half terms and holidays to practise and compete against one another.
Mini tennis tournaments
We are committed to introducing players to competition in a friendly
environment where they learn the rules of the game, how to score, to win
and lose and to behave in competition. The club runs a series of mini
tennis tournaments at the three levels (red, orange and green) for
both individuals and teams. Individual tournaments are open to anyone to
enter from the club or any other club in the area. Team events are open to
local clubs to enter and are made up of four players per team, one member
of which must be a girl.
The club enters teams into tournaments held at other clubs in the region
(e.g. Huntingdon Tennis Club and Next Generation Club). These team
competitions have proved highly successful for those of a young age.

Nathan Spies) celebrate their silver medal at Huntingdon Tennis Club
in November 2007 |
Starter tournaments
As the players come out of the mini tennis programme at about the age of
nine they can then participate in the club
starter tournament programme which is an ideal way for players to get
an LTA rating. These are held in school holidays, particularly half-term
holidays.
Talent days
The best players from the club are invited every two or three months to a
county talent day where they
are looked at by the talent performance coordinator from the LTA and some
of the county coaches. Selected players are then invited to special county
training sessions where they get together with players of a similar
standard from around the county.
From here players may then be selected for a regional and ultimately
national talent day. As a club our role is initially to get as many
players as possible to the county talent days and then hope that some
players will be invited to the regional days.
High performance centre
We are lucky to have a High Performance Centre in
Cambridge
based at Hills Road Sports and Tennis Centre. The best players from the
locality and surrounding counties train and practise at the centre from
about the age of 8. The top players from the club, if they are of the
right standard, are invited to attend sessions to enhance their overall
programme. The aim is for our players to do some sessions at the club and
some at
Hills Road
.

meets the Queen at the opening of the Roehampton National Tennis
Centre in March 2007 |
If and when the player is of the appropriate standard and the club cannot
give them the programme they require, they would then do more of their
training at
Hills Road
. They would still play for the club in matches and competitions. Current
members who do this are Robin Goodman, Amanda Black, Laura Oates, Irina
Dulbish, Stella Gordon, Pippa Scotcher and Pippa Horn. Although they do
most of their coaching at
Hills Road
the club is still their home.
