The squares looking like this are the times when you can generally TURN UP AND PLAY without having to make prior arrangements. That's not to say that you don't stand a decent chance at other times, especially on a pleasant evening.

ALL-COMERS SOCIAL EVENINGS

As a way of kicking off the tennis season and giving a chance for new and existing members, and prospective new members to mix in and socialise, the club will be running a series of All Members Social Evenings. These will be every Thursday of the month throughout May, June and July. Unaccompanied visitors who are considering joining are particularly welcome on Thursdays. We will make sure they are made welcome and introduced to suitable persons to play with.

These will be organised evenings of social tennis. The bar will be open. The idea is that members stay for a while after play to share tennis experiences and chat.

The Members Representative (John Howard) or a Committee member will be on hand at every session as a contact point and to keep things running smoothly.

Guidelines on the order of play

The order of play is designed to provide the most flexibility for members to all enjoy their favourite form of tennis over the week.

Pre-arranged sets inc. mini leagues
In these sessions, players are expected to have made prior arrangements with opponents. Doubles or singles can be played, including mini-league matches (see the mini-league details in the handbook).

Doubles play has priority
In these sessions, players organise themselves into doubles games as social tennis. This form of play has priority over other forms except the coaching courts and allotted junior courts. Other forms of play are allowed, but must give up courts for social doubles games on request.

Club play and pre-arranged sets inc. mini leagues
The term "club play" refers to general social tennis, with people forming games of doubles or singles at the time. The other terms are explained above.

All-comers Social Evenings
On Thursday nights in May and June, there will be special "All-comers" social evenings.

Basic survival guide

(Including essential things to know about promoting good will in club play!)

Remember that whatever the type of play, apart from tournaments and matches, players are expected to vacate their court after one short set, or thirty minutes of practice, if people are waiting, even if other courts are free. This is to provide choice in the court surface and prevent a first come, first hog approach. This approach replaces the old court priority system as the only control on court allocation.

Please wear recognised tennis clothing and footwear when on court, including the current shoe tag. Those not wearing shoe tags may be challenged as to whether they have paid their fees.

Please abide by the daily order of play as stated in the club rules and this handbook. Changes to this can be made at the AGM if there is enough support.

Tennis balls of a type approved by the LTA will be available in the summer season, arranged in net bags of four inside the clubhouse door. Four club balls should be available for each court.

Please remember to gather balls after a game and return them to the clubhouse. If a ball goes into the hedge or goes astray elsewhere, please make a good effort to retrieve it, because no-one-else will !

When your tennis ball goes onto another court, please wait for those on that court to finish their point before asking for the return of the ball, unless you see a potential accident !

When people are playing on courts, please respect their space and refrain from walking across the back of the courts while they are playing for points. IF THERE IS A TEAM MATCH, PLEASE TRY TO AVOID HAVING TO GO ON THE COURT AT ALL, GO THE LONG WAY AROUND.

All questions over general club activities should be answered in the club rules and constitution, which are pinned to the notice board. If you still have a problem, please put your query to a committee member, who will try to help.

Please do your utmost to keep the clubhouse clean and tidy.

Please be courteous and polite to other members at all times.

Now enjoy your tennis!

Floodlighting

The floodlighting system is on courts 1 and 2, i.e. the Astroturf courts opposite the clubhouse.

The important points you need to know are:

The floodlights are currently available free of charge to members on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and from 20:00 until 22:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. There is no flood-lit play on a Sunday.

The floodlights can be used up to 22.00 only (a cut-off switch is installed to ensure this).

To book floodlit court time, see the booking form on the notice board.

A beacon will flash on the central column when you have five minutes remaining of your timed period.

It is hoped you enjoy using the floodlights, but if you have any questions or comments, please see your Members’ Representative or any Committee member.
